The Zambian-Congo copper belt is home to some of the world's richest mines. Zambia is one of the most pro-mining jurisdictions in Africa with plenty of skilled labour and government support for explorers. Miners in the country are upbeat about the new government of Hakainde Hichilema, which is distancing itself from its predecessor's cosy relationship with Chinese miners.
Midnight Sun [TSX.V:MMA / OTCQB:MDNGF] is a junior miner active in the very promising Zambian copper belt and owns licenses at Solwezi, which is next to one of the largest copper mines in Africa, namely First Quantum Minerals' giant Kansanshi mine. As of 2012 the updated resource for Kansanshi was an estimated 744.3 Mt @ 0.86% Cu and 0.15ppm Au. It is also home to existing infrastructure like a 1.2m tonne per year smelter. We caught up with Matt MacKenzie of Midnight Sun in March.
